Currently the Director of Player Development for the Detroit Red Wings, Danny has taken his work ethic, leadership, and hockey IQ to the front office after a successful 20-year professional player career. His passion and knowledge to develop young players in Newfoundland & Labrador is very evident at his hockey school as he demonstrates championship qualities every day. Transferring his championship habits from his playing days with the Detroit Red Wings to all participants is his number one priority and this is what separates his hockey school from others. Being the first ever player from Newfoundland & Labrador to hoist the Stanley Cup was the highlight of his long career- and now through developing the skills of his participants he hoes that one day another player from his home province will experience hoisting the Stanley Cup like he did.
Currently an Amateur Scout for the Detroit Red Wings, Corey has 28 years experience as a Head Ice Instructor. Corey delivers a unique energized style of teaching for all his participants. Implementing skill development, hard work, discipline, and fun daily. Corey’s passion for developing young hockey players and teaching puts him in a league of his own. Growing up in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland with lifelong friend Danny Cleary he was fortunate to win many championships during his time playing minor hockey. Corey went on to play for the historic junior franchise, Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League at the age of 16 where he again won a championship and was a finalist in the Memorial Cup. Originally drafted in 1976b by the Washington Capitals, Jim played all of two seasons with the Capitals. After playing two seasons in the minor leagues, Jim signed to play in the Finnish SM-Liiga. After two seasons with TPS TURKU he played in Finalnd for another 12 seasons, before retiring from playing in 1994. After his playing career, he served as the Goalie Coach for the Detroit Red Wings for 19 seasons where is won 3 Stanley Cups in 1998, 2002, and 2008. In 2016, Jim moved from the Red Wings organizations to join the Dallas Stars as their Goalie Coach. Jim has coached the best of the best goalies such as Dominik Hasek, Chris Osgood, and Jimmy Howard. Jim has been the Head Goalie Coach for the Danny Cleary Hockey School since 2009.
With 27 years of experience as a Physical Education teacher Doug Hart brings a wealth of knowledge to the Off-Ice Fitness Program and Logistical Planning at the Danny Cleary Hockey School. His energetic and disciplined approach gives DCHS participants a great introduction to hockey specific training which is both developmentally appropriate and fun. His attention to detail and scheduling expertise keeps the DCHS running smoothly at all times and makes our athlete's experience unique and fulfilling. Originally hailing from Oxford, Nova Scotia, Doug played ACAA Soccer and Basketball at Nova Scotia Teachers College in Truro, Nova Scotia. He has been the Athletic Director and Physical Education Teacher Oxford Regional Education Centre since 1997. In addition to teaching, Doug coached basketball at Mount Allison University for 17 years attending the CCAA National Championships on four occasions. 2024 will be Doug’s 9th year with the DCHS.
A product of Bell Island, Newfoundland, Gavin has 24 years of experience as a Head Ice Instructor and has coached at a variety of levels in the province. He begin playing junior hockey at the age of 16 with the Bell Island Blues before moving to play senior hockey with the Mount Peral Blades. Gavin has been teaching High School Physical Education for 19 years. Gavin is a natural teacher who has a strong talent from analyzing skill development and understanding the steps to improve individual skill at all levels. Gavin’s delivery on the ice is professional, clear, and concise so all players can easily understand and absorb concepts.
Jeff Lewis is currently in his 12 th year as the Director of Hockey and Head Coach of the Boys’ Prep School Hockey Team at Rothesay Netherwood School (RNS). Jeff brings a wealth of knowledge and coaching experience to the Danny Cleary Hockey School from various levels and backgrounds and is known for his ability to effectively communicate and educate young hockey players. Jeff also currently scouts for the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Before his time at RNS Jeff worked with Hockey Nova Scotia and their Program of Excellence Programs and was a physical education teacher in Pugwash, Nova Scotia. Jeff also coached in the Maritime Hockey League along side Corey Crocker with the Amherst Jr. Ramblers. Jeff’s enthusiasm and energy for developing young hockey players is a staple at the DCHS Showcase.
